Taking orders on WhatsApp with Shopify: when it works and how to set it up

WhatsApp ordering isn't for every store. When it lifts sales, what a good order message looks like, and how to turn a chat into an order.

Many shoppers want to talk to the seller before buying: will this size fit, when will it ship, can I pay on delivery? WhatsApp is the most natural place to answer those questions. Set up well, it wins back shoppers who hesitate at checkout.

Which stores benefit from WhatsApp ordering?

  • Personalized products: Prints, measurements and notes get clarified in chat.
  • High-ticket items: Shoppers look for reassurance before paying.
  • Cash-on-delivery markets: It gives an alternative path to shoppers wary of paying online.
  • Wholesale and B2B requests: Bulk orders usually need negotiation and confirmation.

If you sell many low-value orders with a small team, running every order through chat gets tiring. In that case offer WhatsApp next to checkout, not instead of it.

What a good order message includes

Every word the shopper has to type makes them less likely to send the message. A pre-filled message should contain:

  • Product name and the selected variant (color, size)
  • Quantity and current price
  • A link to the product page
  • A short greeting and room for the shopper to add details

Nothing should be sent automatically: when WhatsApp opens, the shopper should see the message and be able to edit it. That builds trust and cuts down on wrong orders.

Speed is everything

People who message on WhatsApp expect a fast reply. The longer they wait, the more likely they are to buy elsewhere.

  • Show your working hours near the button or in an automatic greeting.
  • Keep quick replies in WhatsApp Business for common questions (shipping time, returns, payment options).
  • Use an away message that says when you'll be back for messages outside working hours.

Turning the chat into an order

Once you agree on the order, record it in Shopify so stock, accounting and shipping stay in sync. With Shopify's draft orders you can create the order and send the customer a payment link, or mark it as cash on delivery.

Measure it

Track which products get the most WhatsApp clicks. If a product gets plenty of clicks but few sales, the product page is probably missing answers — size charts, shipping times or return terms. Answering them on the page saves time for both of you.

Mind personal data

Customer details shared over WhatsApp are personal data too. Mention the channel in your privacy notice and don't ask for more information than you need.
