8 ways to raise average order value on Shopify
Instead of chasing more visitors, grow the carts you already have. Eight tactics that don't depend on constant discounting.
With ad costs rising, earning more from every visitor is one of the most efficient ways to grow. When average order value (AOV) goes up, the same ad budget brings in more revenue — and usually more profit.
1. Free shipping threshold
The best-known tactic and still one of the most effective. Set the threshold slightly above your AOV and show the remaining amount in the cart.
2. Tiered rewards
Instead of one threshold, set a few steps: free shipping at one amount, a gift at a higher one, a discount at the top. Reaching one goal reveals the next.
3. Gift with purchase
A small gift above a certain amount costs less margin than a discount and is remembered longer. Offering slow-moving products as gifts also helps clear stock.
4. Bundles
Sell products that go together as a bundle — shampoo and conditioner, a case and a screen protector. The bundle price should be a little better than buying separately.
5. Quantity breaks
Tiers such as "buy 2, save 10%; buy 3, save 15%" work well for consumables and repeat-use products.
6. Relevant add-ons in the cart
Suggest related, affordable products in the cart. The add-on should cost a fraction of what's already in the cart; expensive suggestions create hesitation.
7. Loyalty program
Shoppers who can see how close they are to the next tier or reward tend to add one more item. Loyalty supports both AOV and repeat purchases.
8. Confidence on the product page
Sometimes shoppers want to buy more but aren't sure. A clear size chart, easy returns and a fast way to ask questions (such as WhatsApp) reduce hesitation.
Don't get hooked on discounts
Constant discounts teach customers never to pay full price. Most of the tactics above add value instead: gifts, free shipping, bundle savings, status. After each change, track conversion rate and margin alongside AOV — a higher AOV alone isn't enough.
