Shopify store speed guide: practical ways to improve Core Web Vitals
A slow store loses both sales and search rankings. How to measure speed properly and the fixes that make the biggest difference.
A product page that loads slowly on mobile can lose the shopper before they even see the product, and Google uses page experience as one of its ranking signals. The good news: most Shopify speed problems come from a few familiar places.
Measure properly
- PageSpeed Insights: Test your home page, a collection and your best-selling product page separately. Focus on mobile.
- Real-user data: The "what your real users are experiencing" section matters more than the lab score.
- Three core metrics: LCP (largest content load time), INP (responsiveness to interactions) and CLS (layout shift).
1. Images
Images are usually the biggest weight. Shopify serves images in suitable sizes and formats automatically, but still:
- Don't upload huge originals (for example 5,000 pixels wide).
- Think twice before putting a slider or video over the hero image.
- Make sure everything except the first image above the fold is lazy-loaded; modern themes do this by default.
2. Apps
Each app can add its own script to every page. Remove apps you don't use and check that no code is left in the theme afterwards. Apps that run as App Embeds can be switched off one by one under App embeds in the theme editor so you can measure their impact.
3. Fonts
Many font families and weights slow loading down. Two families and a few weights are enough for most brands. Prefer the fonts your theme provides when you can.
4. Sliders and pop-ups
Auto-rotating sliders are slow and rarely clicked. Pop-ups that appear the moment the page opens hurt the mobile experience and can increase CLS. A single strong hero image usually performs better.
5. Theme
Old or heavily customized themes get sluggish over time. Use an up-to-date Online Store 2.0 theme and keep up with theme updates. Have leftover code from removed apps cleaned out.
6. Third-party tracking
Every marketing tag adds weight. Remove pixels and tags you no longer use; Shopify's Customer Events feature helps you manage tracking in a more controlled way.
Measure first, then change
Measure the same pages before and after every change. That way you see which fix actually made a difference and spend your time on what matters.
